OutPatient Detox Q & A

What is outpatient detox?

If you’ve become physically dependent on opioids for pain or benzodiazepines for anxiety, you may need help recovering from addiction. Depending on your specific condition, you may be an excellent candidate for an outpatient detox program.

A board-certified addictionologist reviews your history and creates a customized treatment plan to help you detox at home. At Headrick Medical Center, the outpatient detox program combines medication, counseling, and other carefully selected therapies.

Outpatient detox programs require just as much of a commitment to recovery as inpatient programs, if not more as you will need to work toward recovery, while also maintaining your regular activities.

What should I expect from outpatient detox?

If you opt for the outpatient detox program, you sign a commitment not to abuse your medication or other substances. Your plan may start with bi-weekly appointments and frequent urine drug screenings.

You also attend counseling sessions and group therapy to learn to control your urges to use a substance and practice strategies and techniques to adjust your behavior to reduce your risk of relapse.

Your provider may prescribe Suboxone® to control the physical symptoms of addiction and withdrawal.

Alternatively, they also offer the Bridge™ system. The Bridge system is a neuromodulating device that reduces the acute and painful symptoms of withdrawal without using medication.

Your provider attaches the Bridge device to your head in a 15-minute, minimally invasive procedure. Then for 96 hours it releases neuromodulating signals to block pain, cravings, and other withdrawal symptoms.

What are the benefits of outpatient detox?

Though most inpatient detox programs require you to commit to 30, 60, or 90 days away from your regular life, the outpatient detox program doesn’t have to get in the way of your other responsibilities.

Even though you need to commit to attending your appointments and counseling sessions, you don’t need to be away from your family or take time off work.

The program is just as rigorous as an inpatient detox program, although instead of relying on the structures and boundaries of an inpatient clinic, you need to have a robust support system from your family and friends.
